Ensuring Almería’s Water supply
This project aims to resolve the drinking water shortage in the Almerian municipalities of Bajo Andaráx Community (Viator, Huércal, Pechina, Benahadux, Rioja, Gádor and Santa Fé de Mondújar) due to the depletion of natural resources (draining of natural aquifers) and a significant population growth trend.
The hydraulic system is projected for the year 2031, 46,883 inhabitants, and provides the supply from four different sources, groundwater catchments at La Calderona, groundwater catchments at Bernal, sea water desalination plant in Almería and sea water desalination plant in Carboneras. This source diversification ensures the supply of drinking water.
A total of 26,113 m of pipeline is defined: drive ductile cast iron pipeline La Pipa – Nuevo Depósito de Huércal of Almería of 600 mm in diameter and 7,504 m in length, a reversible main pipeline of ductile cast iron, with a total length of 14,703 m, of which 7,911 m are 600 mm in diameter and 6,792 m are 450 mm in diameter and the Cuatro Vegas connecting pipeline of ductile cast iron 600 mm in diameter and 3,911 m in length.
The design also included the Huércal and Rioja regulation tanks, with a capacity of 20,000 m3 and 3,000 m3 respectively, and a Rioja pumping station, consisting of multicellular motor pumps of 100 kW each.
