The South upgrades its connection with Madrid
The project includes several actions in the A-4 highway, along the existing section between km points 347+550 and 435+500, with an approximate length of 88 km.
The «Autovía del Sur» or A-4 highway is part of the European highway E05 and is the main route between the center and the south of the Iberian Peninsula . It connects the cities of Madrid, Córdoba, Seville and Cádiz, among others, and was built at the end of the 80s. Although it has relatively broad general design parameters, it was built in a very different time from the present, under very different criteria and regulations than those in force today.
Therefore, in order to extend its functionality during future years, there is a need for a general review and analysis of possible aspects that should be improved and adapted to the current needs, in terms of adaptation to regulations, service levels, general functionality and the economic assessment that all this implies.
After the review, the need for two types of interventions was concluded, which include the modification of the current route of the A-4, either in plan or elevation, and others that affect roads connected to the motorway trunk itself. The latter interventions focus on the adaptation of link branches to current regulations, the creation of collecting or service roads, the removal of link intersections and their replacement by roundabouts, the extension of the highway platform with braided lanes between links, etc.
